Because some fools take the story literally.

This may take awhile. And you might want to stand back.

    Oooooooo

A lot of Latinos (or to be more specific, Latinas) I know say the same thing. There is a lot of racism among Latinos, and the macho culture is strong, so guys like Trump are attractive. And yeah, like a lot of immigrants, once they get in, they want to pull up the ladder so nobody else can climb up.

It was a multinational group taken captive, some from neutral nations. From my great-aunt’s recollections and writings, they were treated far better than military prisoners but had little food and were moved around a lot. They were used in prisoner exchanges, and my great-aunt was eventually sent to Sweden in one such exchange. (I think in late 1943).

Are you talking about prisoners of war or civilians? We know about the U.S. detention centers of Americans of Japanese descent. The darkest blot on FDR’s legacy. For what it’s worth, the Roosevelt family authorized a year-long exhibit at the FDR Library about the camps and their stain on America. It was curated by a Japanese-American organization (can’t remember the name), and George Takei spoke at a forum at it. Eleanor Roosevelt was vehemently opposed to the camps and went to one in order to apologize. For his part, FDR was afraid riots and mass murders would erupt if he didn’t do it. This doesn’t justify the camps in the least, just gives some historical context.

As to how U.S soldiers treated Japanese prisoners of war, that evolved (or devolved) based on how Japanese soldiers treated US prisoners. Also, Japanese often pretended to surrender or played dead in order to take their enemies by surprise — so a “take no prisoners” attitude did develop. But not without cause. Japanese soldiers were utterly brutal to their prisoners of war and showed no mercy.

No argument about that. But the question was about Latinos, and in Latino culture, macho is a big thing.

Meh, my wife is a social worker and earns well enough. But the stress is so high — and getting higher — that she’d just about prefer a lower paying job.

Ironically, they’re so desperate for social workers and others in the psychological professions that he’d have no trouble getting a job in his profession. However, the burnout rate is high, so he may have chosen to get out of it.
