It’s difficult to see this strip continue insulting Gould’s original work. In the late thirties and early forties, 150 newspapers carried the strip with 10 million readers. I’m revisiting the Real Dick Tracy with Vol 8 and with Vol 9 on order. I can’t believe a new artist and writer can revive or survive with another iteration with the failing of the newspapers. As of now, the comments are the engine that motivate the commentators, the strip is pretty much nothing but poor artwork and nonsense writing. This is my last comment.
I just checked out “Calvin and Hobbes”. There are about 63 comments with one in particular that’s a scream. Oh and.. again I say…. “It’s Happened” this strip is dead, gone , kaput!!!
I believe that many years ago, Locher as an apprentice to Chester Gould was chewed out for poor and sloppy artwork. It has been fermenting for these many years and with age has transformed into “Locher’s Revenge” and is a deliberate act of destroying forever… Gould’s “Dick Tracy” “It’s Happened” the strip has been murdered,, it’s dead!.
The comments are clever and entertaining, but the end is near. There is no way that this strip can survive a terrible storyline and mediocre art. I suggest everyone read or reread the “Complete Dick Tracy” Volumes starting with #1 through #8. #9 will be available maybe in January. As corny as it could be at times, the period artwork is supurb and make you marvel because of the lead time, how Chester Gould did this strip for so many years. I previously commented that I was for many years a political and editorial cartoonist and for the life of me could never commit myself to a continuing strip. The real Dick Tracy is being archived for future generations to enjoy.
Just received Vol.8 of the Complete Dick Tracy ‘42 - ‘44 with Pruneface on the cover. Flattop makes his appearance Dec 21st, ‘43. It’s about this time (1942} that I started to follow the strip daily along with the other great comics of that era. 9 years old, World War ll, a busy time in our lives. For the old timer’s reading this current version of Dick Tracy, it’s a joke, for kids introduced to it, a shame.
The “comments” are the entertaining force here. What the shame is that the present media environment won’t support this iteration for very much longer to search for a good writer and artiist that could equal the artistry of Gould.
Nice to hear from Maxine_Viller, Stooge’s sister, yesterday. She appeared in the June 27th, 1933 strip. Don’t want to embarress you Maxine, but you must be at least 105 years old. I was 3 months old on that date
