For some reason, I don’t know Steve. But Parisi, Whamond, Wayno, Coverly, Hilary Price … we’re all friends. I was just emailing back and forth with Mark and Dave this morning.

Believe it or not, my daughter is a doctor. When she was in med school she had to practice proctological exams. I thought they’d use some artificial device. Nope. There are real people who hire out to get proctologu exams so students can learn.

I wish we were that organized. This stuff just happens sometimes. I once did an idea TWO other cartoonists had the same idea and they all ran in newspapers the same day. Everyone was sure we rigged it.

Happy to help. Your doctor told me your guffaw levels were a little low.

Funny you should use that example. As a younger man, I worked at a newspaper and my job was to promote this new cartoon called The Far Side we were adding. So I saw Cow Tools before it hit papers. I was already a fan and since I was baffled, I wrote Larson a letter and asked. Weeks later, he wrote back and described his thought process. The idea that I would later learn to draw, create a comic, and end up being syndicated by, and working with, the very people that worked with him is mind boggling.

Probably could have been clearer with the disease name, but it seems like most people got the gag. Thanks.

As do I. Where do you think this idea came from?

It’s still one panel, just in the same long horizontal format of a multi-panel strip. Fits in more papers that way. There are more strip spaces on a comics page than panel spaces. You just always have to draw the original art in a way that fits both. It also means there’s non-essential art to the side of each panel you never see here.

Not sure why that happened. Must just be a mistake and my syndicate sent along the black & white file instead of the color one. Inside story: since Loose Parts runs in both panel and strip form; and runs in two different Sunday sizes as well, I end up shipping some 106 pieces of art every month. Fun job.
