   Nothing in the strip indicates that the thumbprint is a left thumb. The first suspect is holding the saw in his left hand. It is unlikely that he would switch it to his left hand just to wipe his face. He would more likely lay it aside.

   It was the American. Any of the others would have written 17 Feb. He used the paper to shift suspicion to the foreigners.
