Truth is, a man Earl’s age has little use for life insurance unless he has no savings at all. No one is dependent on his income. His home is probably paid for. He drives an old Studebaker at minimal cost. His diet is, to put it nicely, frugal. He takes few pills and his medical is largely covered by Medicare. He probably has a supplemental health plan and a supplemental prescription plan. Earl has very few financial needs and the same is true of Opal.
Having been a security guard myself, most of these young guys (like I was) saw the job mainly as a way to pay for college. They get grumpy because they are royally chewed out if people ignore them. For this reason I preferred to work banks. People don’t mess with the bank guards.
Yeah, they tell me if I fall down to stay down until help arrives. If I hit my head I could get hemorrhaging in my brain. The one time I did fall down I broke my neck in two places and didn’t realize it until several hours later.
We actually argue over who gets to do laundry and dishes. We like it because we like the warmth on our hands. Unfortunately, I have gotten old and slow before my wife did, but she sometimes lets me take a turn anyway.
Every year my wife says she won’t decorate and every year our house looks like it came from a Hallmark movie.
