I working in this building for 11 years. No spittoons, but there were ash trays stored in the basement.
They are on I-277. Old interstate highway that circles Charlotte. Highway 16 intersects from the North and the mountains are North of Charlotte. The fictional town of Gasoline Alley is probably North of Charlotte somewhere near 16. 277 is short – only 6 miles in circumference.

I worked in a building from 1996 to 2007 that looks exactly like the one Jim has drawn. It is located in Statesville, North Carolina.
