   I use my phone for almost everything (except Home Depot, which still doesn’t use card readers that allow tapping*) but I keep some $1 & $5 bills in my wallet for tip jars. I prefer to use cash for tips at some fast food places so that the workers don’t have to wait for management to share the tips.

   *Did you know that some credit card companies charge the retailer extra for readers that allow tapping? At least that’s what I was told.

   The only ATMs I use are at a branch of my Credit Union, and there’s never a charge. On the other hand, I never get cash back because it slows down the checkout process for me and those behind me. I just tap my phone and go.

   I think Radio Shack might have been the last dealer of vacuum tubes, and they were made in Russia. The Shack sold tubes with a guaranteed replacement, but when they ran out, they were out.

   We visited a distant cousin in San Diego back in the 1940’s and she used cactus needles in her record player. They didn’t sound good, and they didn’t last long, but the price was right.

   About the same time my grandparents had an original Edison Victrola in their basement and I spent hours there playing the old 1/4" thick bakelite recordings from WW I time frame. Lots of Caruso and war songs like "Oh how I hate to get up in the morning!, “Over There”, and “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again”. The pickup swiveled up and down while it rode the record, and the sound was funneled down to the big conical acoustical speaker in the cabinet. It was all crank-operated with a governor to adjust the speed.

   So I decided to use my allowance to ride my bike down to the record store and get a “modern” 78 vinyl record that I had heard on the radio. I brought it home, put it on the Edison turntable, and lowered the emerald stylus onto the record. Yes, it played it, but only once. The stylus was too fat for the newer grooves and carved them up as they played. It was a lesson in technology that I never forgot.
