My younger daughter has been almost dangerous since she discovered Google as a child. She researches everything. When she got her braces, the second she got home she got online and researched holistic pain remedies. She’s 20 now & still loves to research. We have a saying: if someone says something about, “I wonder…[enter topic]” she’ll grab her phone & we’ll say, “Uh-oh…we’ve fed the Research Monster!”

I remember when I was a kid my friends & I created a bunch of secret clubs, each with its own secret code. I had a book of codes so we had plenty to choose from. Each club lasted maybe a week.

I used to have a cat named Mitch. I never called him when I had a cold.

That reminds me of when my baby brother graduated from his crib to a bed. Unfortunately, it was MY (twin) bed…and I was still using it! I finally gave up & slept on the floor until one of my older sisters left home; then I took hers.

I remember something one of my dear friends told me. He grew up in northern NY state, and they called rainboots “rubbers”. His family moved here to NH; we call them galoshes. On his first day of middle school, it was raining, and his mother yelled out the door, “You forgot your rubbers!” The bus stop was right in front of his house & other kids were there. It took him a long time to live that down. (I miss you, Chris; RIP)

Not only do my daughters & I often say the same thing at the same time, we sometimes TEXT the same thing at the same time!

That’s the way friends work when you’re that young. I remember being “bitter enemies” with my next-door BFF. I would do things like stand by the border marker in front of her yard…technically not IN her yard. But we always made up, no matter how stupid our squabbles were.

When we got our 1st grade photos taken, the letter sent home to parents asked that the children look “natural”. My mother decided that I had “naturally” curly hair & gave me a perm. I looked like Zoe, only brown instead of red.

I remember when my family spent an afternoon in Mexico (we were visiting my brother in El Paso so we just walked across). I was in awe of my mother, who bargained left & right, and usually ended up with a great bargain. (Apropos to nothing, I learned never to wear a monogrammed item there; it creeped me out when shopkeepers called me by name because of my necklace. Come to think of it, in the over 40 years since then I’ve never owned any article of clothing/jewelry with my name on it.)

Not necessarily “girl math”. My boss is a man and I sometimes have to rein in his “bargain shopping”. He’ll say, “I found [item] for a great price!” I’d counter with, “But do you NEED [item]?”
