Ain’t THAT the truth! The real reason for the season concerns an event that transpired in a manger in Bethlehem centuries ago. Glad to see that Jim Scancarelli pointed it out.
It’s not just Jack Benny and the WB cartoons that are referenced in this “Anaheim, Azusa” comment. In 1964, Jan and Dean recorded a song called The Anaheim, Azusa And Cucamonga Sewing Circle, Book Review And Timing Association, which probably ties with Nino Tempo and April Stevens’ I’ve Been Carrying A Torch For You For So Long That I Burned A Great Big Hole In My Heart as one of the longest titles to be squeezed onto the label of a 45 RPM record!
Quite frankly, if I were Luann, I’d be more frustrated with her dad in the car than in this scene. Here, he’s engaging in typical fatherly behavior, which is to be expected. But when he’s in the car with Luann at the wheel, his back seat driving would drive me crazy enough to open the passenger door and kick him out at 40 MPH!!
Part of the essential big picture in this strip is that Rob usually pontificates, while Bucky (for better or for worse) takes action. And that’s what more often than not makes Bucky right! His so-called illogic usually represents a more rational perspective than whatever Rob has to offer.
Bet he wouldn’t have given Rochester grief like that…..
