Do we need a Department of Euphemisms added to the Executive Branch? Might create a few new jobs, and the pay would certainly be better than anything Wallyworld offers.

In which country do you live, paha_siga? “Paha,” by the way, is the North American Sioux Indian word for “hill” or “mountain.” For what it’s worth, I enjoy bemusing my neighbors by displaying the French Tricolor on my flag pole every July 14, Bastille Day.

She needn’t worry about being taken to the moon. The poor kid is going to die of lung cancer from all the secondhand smoke in the room!

Mona needs to go back to ESL classes. She has made a terrible grammatical faux pas in the final panel. “Someone” is singular and cannot be correctly referred to subsequently by the plural pronoun “their.” If Mona does not watch her language, she’ll appear to be as poorly educated as most of the high school and university graduates in the United States today.

Excellent editorial—and all too true. Aside from capitalism, gun worship has become the true religion of our society. Any intelligent people would have abolish the obsolete Second Amendment by now and prohibited all private ownership of weapons. But we U.S. citizens (not “Americans” since that term includes all citizens of Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America, for they also share this continent) have not shown ourselves to be be especially logical or rational. For myself, I’ll continue to vote for the most progressive candidates available in every election and donating to gun control activist groups.

I would suggest rather that we eliminate ALL competition in school. Teaching cooperation, collegiality, and shared learning and creativity would make much better team players down the road than the old “rugged individualism” bit.

And our gutless senators kill even a weak proposal to put simple background checks on buyers of these weapons of death. Shame on them—but even more shame on the ignorant voters who put these demagogues into office. Good old USA, land of the gun nuts and home of the slaughtered.

Ignorance = poverty = angst = homophobia = gun worship = political conservatism. Frustratingly, the cycle tends to replicate itself since children of ignorant parents tend to remain ignorant themselves. Breaking the cycle requires exposure to extraordinary teachers somewhere along the way, but those are few few and far between.

Love the message, but the sentence “…the average person spends nine years of their life….” contains a pronoun-antecedent agreement error. “Their” is a plural pronoun and cannot logically or grammatically be used to refer to “person,” which is a singular noun.

Pascal’s response “It would be less….” is also ungrammatical because he is referring to “years,” which is a quantifiable noun. Consequently, he should have said "It would be fewer….

Perhaps Rose and Pascal would both benefit from a review of basic English grammar!
