Love it, MMM. Darmok and Jalad on the ocean… His arms wide.

I know that @jrankin1959 beat me to it, but now there is no doubt with that hair that Aunt Fritzi is an actual aunt to Nancy. Only 8 weeks into Jaimes’ tenure, and we are already establishing genetic proof of Nancy’s lineage. I wrote yesterday that I can relate to Jaimes’ version of Nancy much easier than Guy’s… well the same goes for Aunt Fritzi. She reminds me of Ms. Kazbot much more than Guy’s pin up version. Laughing has come easier with OJ at the helm.

Maybe it’s because I have a 11 year old daughter today, but I find OJ’s take on Nancy significantly more relatable than the little girl from a few years ago who would cry every time a country music hall of famer passed away. No offense to Guy, his stuff was fine… but almost every thing this newer Nancy does reminds me of my kid. Today’s is just another pretty good example of an exaggerated version of a conversation I have actually had with my girl, so it made me belly laugh. Maybe there are few people in here who’s kids wrote country songs and (was it “hippy dippy”) poems under trees, but mine uses an iPad, a laptop, and has a smart-alecky personality. I’m still thinking OJ is more relatable, and therefore an improvement.

Keep in mind that in many of today’s schools, kids are given devices at the beginning of school to keep all year round… sometimes Chromebooks, sometimes iPads. Sluggo would be given the same equipment as any other kid in town.

I have a feeling I know what can fix this entire situation with Master… and that’s a full, no-holds barred interview with Dafne and Jay, the caring reporters over at the Trumpet. He can get his anger out, and they can write a good interview that everyone at the school, but especially Ms. Rizk can appreciate.

I don’t see the gun plot here, as much as a redemption arc for the gang down at the school’s newspaper: After leading the local gang of issue thugs bullying their local radio host to alcoholism, this gang of misfit reporters are going to find a way to make things right by giving a young Master Bader another chance to let go of his anger by baring his soul in his exclusive, tell-all story to the Trumpet. Good guys: the Trumpet and their staff, fighting for young Bader’s story and the rest of the Milford Administration all the way to the end. Ironic moment: when the Trumpet staff turns to a Marty Moon, appearing only in shadow as their source “Dark Beard”, for advice in how to get Master Bader to finally open up.

@ATOMICDOG is right about NC! Back in my day, they would have had a band down a the water pump… not these fancy soda shops and new fangled record playing machines playing on coins. I mean, what happened to the Gold Standard?

I honestly wondered how long it would take for this to become an issue. Chalk it up to one day.

There appears to be a certain element of them here every day in the comments hoping that Fritzi will be back. The comic is “Nancy”, so whether she appears or not is not necessarily high on my list either. Guy’s Fritzi always seemed to have that classic “pin up” vibe that you would get from a WWII era solider, but in the 2010’s, it seemed a bit out of place, especially by those who appeared to overly stimulated by even the anticipation of her appearance.

I’m keen to see where the evolution continues to go, and Fritzi or no Fritzi, I’m sure I’ll be happy. If OJ keeps her Fritzi the way she appears in P1, I will be more than happy.

By far, the best comment day of the year. Heads blowing up all around. Everything from this single panel, profile debut being “the absolute greatest version of Fritzi ever” to “anyone who thinks Gilchrist’s version of Fritzi is bad is a self-loathing Feminazi”. Since we are all spouting our opinions, here’s mine:

Strangely enough, I probably come down somewhere in the middle of that, but I would guess like most people, way more towards the side that Olivia’s version of Ms. Ritz looks good to me.

If there is one thing I have learned over the last 5 weeks or so, it is that Nancy’s aunt holds significant cultural significance to many people here… far more than I would have expected. The weeks and weeks of pining for “when will Fritzi show up and what will she look like” was full of anticipation, both negative and positive. Olivia’s version of Fritzi is not the first change in her interpretation, and hardly unexpected considering Jaimes’ style.

I, for one, am NOT done reading the new Nancy. The gags are pretty good, the drawing is a new and interesting style to me, and the focus on a more modern version of the protagonist is enjoyable. I did not dislike Gilchrist, but I do like change Olivia has introduced.

For those who say Nancy is NOT a comic about modern times, look to today’s Nancy Classic. Sluggo and Nancy are both playing the classic game “Cowboys and Indians”. To my knowledge, that was probably a pretty common game back when Bushmiller wrote the strip, so it fit with the times, like cell phones are a reality today. That said, I still bet there was likely a curmudgeon or two complaining into their newspapers in the 1950’s that Nancy back in their day would stick to shutting up and doing her job at the orphanage.

    Times change… thankfully.
