Flip this around ā€“ I had a teacher who would have shown a play-on-words like this, because itā€™s a teachable moment about the difference between the format of the presentation and the data it presents. And having taught intro computer science courses, where I had to explain the difference between pointers and multi-indirect-pointer structures and the data being pointed to, some people just donā€™t get it. Caulfield, of course, not only gets it but braids it into a hat.

We saw ā€œOver the Hedgeā€ in the movies; then we saw it on a plane heading to Europe to see relatives; and then we took the relatives to see it in Dutch in the south of Holland. Never understood why it didnā€™t get another story.

At two different places, Iā€™ve seen the guy who got all his work done for the day ā€“ and more ā€“ be the one to be laid off precisely because he looked ā€œdoneā€ and didnā€™t look as busy (if you didnā€™t look at non-obvious indicators of amount of work completed). Iā€™ve also seen the one guy who knew where all the bodies were buried laid off, which literally led to the shutting of the company.

I used to leaf through our copy of Rogetā€™s, and Bartlettā€™s Quotations. Think of them as highlight reels.

Some of the classics are also more meaningful when one has a bit more experience than a high school student.

I donā€™t understand why people voluntarily subject themselves to Prohibition rather than aim at sensible moderation.

As a comedian he ā€œworked cleanā€ and had such a great reputation ā€“ until the truth came out. Like with Woody Allen, itā€™s sad to lose good work because the creator was a bad person.

ā€œI wear a fez now. Fezes are cool.ā€

I have always wondered if Adams had some inspiration from Wodehouse: ā€œA planter, apparently, does not consider he has had a drink unless it contains at least seven ingredients, and Iā€™m not saying, mind you, that he isnā€™t right. The man behind the bar told us the things were called Green Swizzles; and, if ever I marry and have a son, Green Swizzle Wooster is the name that will go down in the register.ā€
