    Lonewolf—at the time Fred ran up the stairs to retrieve his present, the doors were partially open due to the cleaning maid inside the room. Fortunately, the squeaky-toy hadn’t been collected yet. It was on the corner of the bed; Fred snatched it, and galloped back downstairs.

    Fred’s a basset hound, not a fog horn. Then again, he could very easily sniff his way back home—-bassets and beagles have the second best sniffers; dragons being No.1, natch.

    Both panels are almost reminiscent of the last Calvin and Hobbes cartoon—both see the beauty of the world, and the wondrous possibilities of life beyond. A warm and endearing end—if it was to be the last “Fred Basset” strip.
