I got one word for you, Mordy:

Prediction Time (I hope I’m wrong, but it’s the way I’ve been seeing this long-term story arc):

Friday – Tom drops the other shoe of “College Tuition” to get Tiff to move back home.Saturday – after a bit of struggle, Tiff is back home at the last panel of the strip.

I’m not hoping for this at all, but it is unfortunately the only logical conclusion for the arc to continue. for the past several months now, bit by bit, Tiffany is being stripped of everything that made her who she was in high school, starting with the material side:

Her figure (from depression)Her spending habits (through the machinations of Ann)Up next: her education (also through Ann)

Now, there has been some development of Tiff as a result of this – she has adapted to her new shape, she appears to begin to live within her means, and she now has a career focus (cosmetology) that requires training, not education. However, I feel that her overall mental/emotional side hasn’t changed much – she still sees herself as the popular cheerleader from high school, with all of the baggage that comes with it. That can only change through emotional means, which can only mean her having to get along with Ann and Tom (cue “Summer at the Ferrell’s”)

Maybe……and yet you may have also unintentionally explained what the “real battle” is between Tiff and Ann…..

Tiff Ferrell (High School) – A practitioner of seduction, manipulation and deception in a bid to get what she wantsAnn Eiffel (Current Day) – A practitioner of seduction, manipulation and deception in a bid to get what she wants

The Tiff we currently see now is lady in changing; still conceited (somewhat), is beginning to be less naive (she isn’t fooled by Ann’s initial deceptions and Ann had to use emotional blackmail to subdue her), and hasn’t really antagonized anyone (including Luann) to the extent she once did. She also explained to Gunther in a previous strip her distant relationship with her dad which can help explain why she was how she was in high school – she was never able to get her father’s love and attention and therefore had to turn to other means to get what she believes is love and attention from those around her.

Ann Eiffel is what Tiff Ferrell would’ve been if she had continued her ways from high school…..she just hasn’t realized it yet. You’re right when you say that this has been coming to her for a while, but maybe this crisis with her facing the personification of her former self will cause Tiff to change for the better.
