Note on romance vs. politics: We can all enjoy the holiday that GT gives us from politics. But aren’t we just like those Republicans who, in order to escape from political reality, read Palin’s book and fantasize about retaking Congress?
Wise professors know that most of their class is dozing intellectually even when they look at you brightly and take notes. The trick is to make the class realize that thinking is worth the effort because arguments can have real-world consequences.
Clinton lost his standing as a trusted leader when he directly and unnecessarily lied to the American people: “I did not have sex with __ , period” (a more self-aware leader like JFK or Nixon would have said “no comment”). Clinton was asking us to believe in a false image of himself. Neither Obama nor Bush has ever done that. Has Palin?
If you feel that Obama’s success at Harvard makes him elite, then you must be proud that Palin had a mediocre college career. And if you further believe that studying our country’s history is a waste of time (after all, doesn’t a real leader learn how the world works by listening to God and Joe the Plumber?), then Palinbush is your candidate two years from now.
Notice that GT does not let us see Palin’s eyes. Sarah herself does her best to conceal them behind spectacles that make her look intelligent. Her earlier pictures without glasses, such as those taken when she was in college, show the eyes of a stupid wild animal. Her person seen close up must be frightening.
