His resignation, as you say and will not dispute, and joining what has become known as the “Lost Cause” of the Confederacy and his love and alliance to Virginia is why he will always be known as a traitor. Other officers of the South stayed, and assisted in keeping our Union together.
We can discuss minute details of what Lee and others did or not do to defend the Confederacy. History has and will continue to show what a terrible, deadly mistake Lee and others made by their decisions to defend and secede from the United States.
And today, just like in the mid-1860s, there is increased talk of secession from the United States by many “Red States.” God help us should they succeed in their efforts. Instead of ethnic cleansing like Syria, Bosnia, and Myanmar, it’ll be political cleansing much like Nazi Germany and the Bolshevik revolution. Tragically, history is trying to repeat itself.
