   If I use a self-depricating ethnic slur then I am taking its power away. If someone else directs a slur at me, then the motivation or interpretation is not to take its power away but to offend. It’s then my choice whether to be offended, but the intent of the word will have a vastly different interpretation depending on whether it is uttered by an in-group or out-group speaker. In other words, a black person using the n-word is not the same a non-black person using it. You still have free speech, but the effect and consequences of your speech are different depending on your ethnic or racial identity. With respect to Huck Finn, I don’t quite understand the editing.

   @Anandy - using the word “fact” doesn’t strengthen your argument, it just reveals that you don’t understand the meaning of the word. “Fact:” cannot be followed by a hypothetical.

   Just thought I’d mention that even if illegal immigrants could vote (which I’m still wondering where that idea came from), the hispanic population is not dominated by democrats and would not help the dems out very much. I worked for a non-partisan organization last election trying to increase the percentage of latinos that vote, and I found that abortion and the catholic church lead many hispanics to vote republican no matter what.

   As if this toon didn’t accurately do enough for my cynicism, I had to read the comments and see how an intelligent non-partisan message ends up with “My guy is crap-but not as crappy* as your guy!” “No, you’re guy is much crappier!” Folks please! Corporations and big oil are stronger when fighting the divided citizens of America

   While this cartoon may not accurately reflect the recent incident, it seems to me that it is a very apt representation of the conflict as a whole over the past 10-50 years.

    No one is born obese. No one must die obese. The obese have not had to organize themselves to protest the discrimination they have faced in the form of turnstiles, movie theaters from the 80’s, etc. Their story is very different from the other groups mentioned above. I’m not suggesting that this justifies fat jokes, just that the obese have had a bigger struggle with societal pressures (any checkout stand) than societal obstacles. Besides, they’re supposed to be jolly according to the only stereotype I can think of right now.
