    The mystery wasn’t ginned up for the TV show, though: people really have been digging there for over 200 years. A tendency by the treasure hunters to find scraps of gold or parchment right when they’re also looking for new investors has kept the search alive for this long, but at this point the notion that 18th-century sailors hid treasure that modern technology can’t retrieve has become ludicrous.
