Virginity tests are widespread in many parts of the world, especially among Muslim countries. Failing these tests can have very adverse consequences. The hymen is real, and some women undergo hymenoplasties. I imagine that having an intact hymen is relatively usual among virgins undergoing these examinations, otherwise there would be greater unjustified bloodbaths than seem to be the case.
