We used to occasionally place styrofoam cups from the galley onto the ROV before diving then recovering them when it came back on deck. They didn’t lose their shape – just shrunk down a lot. But we used to only dive to 2000m.
I’m betting it’s a reference to actor Al Waxman (1935-2001). Al starred on the Canadian sitcom King of Kensington and then was on Cagney and Lacey in the ’80’s. The punchline might have been clearer to some had he written dent Al records. Yeah, it’s a bit of an obscure reference to most (especially the younger folk and non-Canadians) but a lot of cartoonists are going that way these days it seems.
On a flight from Aberdeen to Norwich a couple of months ago British Midlands didn’t charge me for my first bag … but the second bag, weighing only 20kg, cost me an extra £180!
