I didn’t even notice – as in forget that not all places have Middle Eastern food. Los Angeles has plenty of Middle Eastern folks of various ethnicities. My favorite is the stand at our Farmers’ Market. It’s run by Tunisians.

During the Middle Ages, salt was traded for gold – equal value- across the Sahara Desert. Coastal folks had sea salt. Sub-Saharan had excess gold & needed salt. My students always had fun acting out the trade. It helped them realize that both sides need to feel they are benefiting for real trades to work. Also was a lot more fun than just reading the textbook.
