I must be an odd parent – I know I hate being ordered about and treated like I do not matter and am less than so I did not treat my kids that way. We all used please and thank you. At some point that was considered good manners – even if it was a task that you were not allowed to say you were not going to do.
Well, I guess I must not have been a very good parent if not allowing a child to be angry was wrong. I used to let mine be angry, sad, mad, glad, etc. Kids have to learn how to deal with their emotions before they become adults. I used to let them know that they can be as mad as they want, but, I am the parent and what I say goes.
Another way I was a bad parent is that I never allowed TVs, cable, computers, video game systems (other than hand helds) in bedrooms, there was no allowance for doing your chores those are part of what you do as a family member to keep the house running, there were strict curfews, grades were kept up.
But, strict as I am, I was the parent that my kids and their friends preferred to have take them places and do things with them. There was never any question as to where anyone stood or what the rules were.
