He was a nice guy, but he was a big dude with a powerful voice. Most of my classmates didn’t think on their feet that fast under that level of intimidation.
@Ermine Notyours That’s how the tipped vs. non-tipped minimum wage has worked for quite some time – in a common example, the tipped minimum wage is $2.33/hr. and the regular/non-tipped minimum wage is $7.25/hr. As long as a server’s tips add up to $4.92 for every hour they’re there, the employer doesn’t have to pay anything extra (because the tipped minimum and the tips themselves add up to the regular minimum). If the tips don’t hit that minimum, the employer has to make up the difference. Under no circumstances is any employee, tipped or non, supposed to make less than the federal or state minimum wage (whichever is higher.) If they are, that’s wage theft.
Apparently this is baked-in to most POS systems nowadays. There’s a few places I’ve been to that will click “no tip” or 0% before spinning it around because they hate it and know it makes people feel awkward.
