Readers may forget that Mr. Evans pulled the greatest dodge of all some years ago when LuAnn et al were about to “graduate”…necessitating the cartoonist sending her off to college, supplying a largely different supporting cast etc. But at the last moment, he let it be known that they were graduating grade school, and would now do an identical high school all over again for as many years necessary.
Drew Sheneman does not seem (in this cartoon) to be blaming Reagan, although his Presidency definitively proved that “supply side” economics does NOT “create jobs” or boost the economy.
There is no “moral equivalency” between the “2 sides”… or, given the nature of Obama’s "compromises, no “2 sides.” If there were truly another side, it would consist of all those who are determined not to damage Social Security or Medicare. Doing so would not even benefit the extremely wealthy, since extending SS (or Medicare, which should be available for everyone) would actually put every cent of that investment directly into the American economy (with none of it to the private insurance industry, or the CEO’s who bank if offshore)…and actually create jobs. Amazing to think public support is rallied in behalf of private interests draining 30% of the health dollar for non-health purposes. Who benefits thereby? Hardly any of us!
yes, it would have brightened my day had Charlie Brown ever hit a home run or kicked that football. shows how intensely I ID’d with Charlie, tho I managed to connect now & then….not that I would criticize Mr Schulz. There has to be somebody I would not criticize… and he was a real person. Maybe that’s the reason I’ve never read his biography. Charlie Brown is real to me, and I would not change a single strip.
I said “love” when I meant “lose,” unconsciously referring to something money cannot buy, tho it can certainly buy high& low-class imitations… again, at the expense of govt of, by & for the people.
There has been a whole sector of employment that produces necessary & useful products & services but does not attract private corporations who want to show a quick profit. I’m referring to public employment, which the GOP first slandered, then killed. e.g., we have virtually no Health Preparedness plan, to make sure all kids are vaccinated, and funds for the IRS are insufficient to audit wealthy tax avoiders… tho both of these govt departments have been shown to MAKE MONEY… for the population as a whole, that is, not for those of the CEO class, our lords & rulers, who have brilliantly mobilized hatred, ignorance & resentment… and organized a system wherein they gamble with our money, get even richer when they win, and when they love, the taxpayers reimburse them, with only shadow responsibilities attached. One might say, the PR of responsibility, covered non-ironically by the “news,” which is largely owned by the very same people.
GT moves more in the direction of the great realist novelists… probably as good as it gets these days, given that realism is out of fashion & the wide range of GT’s comedy over time, the relatedness of his characters, & his growing detachment.
a moment from our current culture that could be a repeat from times past. the pretty girl confined to her own small bubble, misses not only 2 interesting guys but many other things passing by. As GT knows, not all are like this… but on a given day, one runs into it… along with the next stage up, that ironic half-smile which lets you know she knows the “true motives” which you likely don’t have anymore.
