The Wright brothers did observe birds, and they noticed that the soaring birds like buzzards were able to change direction by adjusting their wing shape, especially at the tips. In 1899 they built a kite to test and confirm this observation. Their achievement was to become the first to be able to control an aircraft in the air. Others had glided and flown in short, uncontrolled hops, but in 1905 the Wrights were able to fly a man-piloted, controlled, and powered aircraft for over half an hour in the air. Others such as Whitehead made undocumented claims, but the Europeans were amazed to see how far ahead the Wrights were technically when Wilbur flew in France in 1908.

The Wright’s patent was on their 1902 glider, not the powered 1903 plane and covered controlling a craft in the air using moveable surfaces, something that Lilienthal, Chanute, and Montgomery were unable to do. Curtis and the French stole this idea from them, ignoring the patent which resulted in the legal battles. Most of Whitehead’s credit came from conflicting reports given by eyewitnesses over 30 years after the fact, and again, no viable means of control. Give credit where credit is due.
