As an ardent liberal, I’m insulted by the line in Sunday’s Get Fuzzy strip “If a tree falls in the woods, how many liberals would it take to fund the therapy for all the trees around it?” The implication that the line is ignorant because it’s uttered by the stupid cat is no doubt lost on conservatives in their gleeful echoing of the vile line. Conservatives never fuss about the quality of the source as long as it’s something they want to hear. I’m sure that if the cat had said, “If a rich man wants another mansion, how many conservatives would line up to give him another tax break,” conservatives would have regarded it as merely the ranting of a stupid cat. Of course such a line is inconsistent with comics because in a Nation driven to perilous debt by Bush’s administration and his Republican lackeys in Congress, it’s not funny. If you’re a liberal, you should be more careful; if you’re a conservative . . .
