This is why so few of the World War II generation live nowadays. The tobacco companies so hooked our men and women in uniform on cigarettes in such a big way that a huge percentage of them died in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

The problem is at the time this strip was published, the only really big professional sport active in the USA is MLB—and MLB has a lull in mid-July with the All-Star Break.
But not to worry—NFL football camps are starting up, and by the end of August college football starts and the NFL season starts in early September.

What has REALLY hurt baseball is that starting this year, they’ve really toughened the rules on banned PED’s. As as result, offensive output is way, way down and it’s turned into the most pitcher-dominated season since 1968.

Actually, due to “no fly zone” restrictions in the aftermath of 9/11, such drones are NOT legal at major sporting events. That’s why you need very special permission to fly blimps and helicopters around major sporting event sites worldwide nowadays.

My problem with baseball is that players do too many time-wasting activities which has stretched a nine-inning game to sometimes way past three hours! In the old days, a nine-inning baseball game finishes somewhere between 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes; maybe strict enforcement of time limits between pitches, a bigger strike zone call, and forcing batters to stay in the batter’s box would cut the time of the game to make it a lot more palatable to modern viewers.

I’d put in Russell, Chamberlain and Jordan for sure. The fourth has too many good candidates to choose from.

They eliminated the home plate collisions because frankly, when the best catchers are earning US$80 to US$100 million guaranteed contracts, team management wants to make sure they can play, not end up out for the season. They should have banned this practice ever since Pete Rose seriously injured Ray Fosse at the 1970 All-Star Game.

Except that Arrowhead Stadium broke the noise level record just recently….

How about allowing each student athlete to be able to hold an outside job up to US$15,000 per year beyond their scholarship? That right there ends the VAST majority of the NCAA violation problems.
I think if college scholarship athletes were allowed to hold real side jobs earning up to US$20,000 per year, a lot of the problems with money would go away really fast.
