   In high school I wanted to grow my hair out from a pixie cut. Went to the lady down the street who had a salon in her basement. While I walked there, my mom called and told her to give me another pixie. Never went back to a salon until I wanted my long hair styled (Gibson girl look) for my wedding.

   I had all 4 out at once by the worst oral surgeon in the city (referred by regular dentist’s receptionist since he was out of town – He was horrified when he found out). Just Novocaine – 30-40 shots of it over 6 hours. Top two came out easily. Bottom 2 seriously impacted – had to be broken up and a bit of jaw had to come out too. Hadn’t had breakfast or lunch that day (although the surgeon took a break for his, leaving me sitting with mouth propped open on rubber block) so all I wanted at that point was a milk shake. Wrong! Sucked out clot from last hole and I developed a dry socket. Worst pain ever.

   According to The Oxford English Dictionary, the singular they showed up in writing in 1375—over 600 years ago! The OED also suggests the usage is even older since written language usually reflects trends already present in spoken language.
