I think that is the reason why some people act so dramatically to mistakes, setbacks, and rejection. I read a story a few years ago where a teen attempted suicide because they did not get into the college they wanted, even though she had a good record and was accepted into another school.
Personally, I think it depends on the kid. I got spanked too on rare occasions, but for me the revoking of privileges like TV, time with friends, etc. seemed to be more effective. If you take away what a kid loves, like TV or video games for a week or two, than can work wonders more than a few swats on a behind that can be soon forgotten
