I love Big Nate and will continue to enjoy reading it, but I entirely agree with you about today’s strip: I, too, found it churlishly sexist and unfunny. How can people compare Tom and Jerry – two fictional characters beating each other up – with Lincoln Peirce insulting the appearance of a real-life woman and hoping to make people laugh at her expense?

This is the sort of joke that goes over really big in the Garfield strip. The trouble with Jim Davis is that he’s only come up with about six non-repeating jokes throughout 38 years. Schulz as a cartoonist was phenomenally versatile and continually came up with something new up to the very end.

Why does everyone keep insisting that the random birds which appeared around Snoopy’s doghouse before 1970 are all Woodstock? Woodstock does not appear until the ‘Snoopy becomes Head Beagle’ story arc of 1970: even Schulz himself confirmed this. I don’t know where the false information that Woodstock first appeared in 1967 originates from. Random birds have appeared in the strip since at least 1951 – would readers say that those birds are Woodstock too?

The strip which you mention was recycled from 1992, as Schulz was on a five-week break at the time and not producing any new strips during that period.

Is it me, or does Charlie Brown watch too much T.V.?

Just out of interest, in what manner do you think Ms Godfrey should be killed off?

Remember the storyline in which Gina tried to get Nate into trouble with Ms Godfrey, and the latter ended up taking Nate´s side and telling Gina that she is disappointed with her? Ms Godfrey was sprayed with a jet of water from a faulty drinking fountain in that story arc.

That´s a little harsh; after all, this is a comments section and everyone is entitled to respectfully voice an opinion about the strip, be it a favourable one or otherwise. I´ve said before that I like the fact that people give honest opinions here, instead of blindly (and thus insincerely) praising each and every strip as is the case on some other comments sections on GoComics (e.g. Garfield).

Hopefully, that will never, ever happen. Before Dee Dee, pretty much every one of the female characters who appeared in the strip were either love interests (Jenny, Kelly, etc) or antagonists (Gina, Mrs Godfrey). What was sorely missing was a sympathetic female character who served the role of a good friend to Nate, and Dee Dee does exactly that. It is refreshing to see a platonic girl-boy friendship portrayed in a comic strip, and I hope that Mr Lincoln keeps it this way.

Don’t let him bug you, Snoopy.
