Aren’t we supposed to put that sort of thing into a limerick around here? :-) (Actually, that’s good information. Schaep knew his his way around ships, shipbuilding, and seamanship, and it shows in paintings like this one.)

All predators and scavengers eat dead meat. It may not have been dead very long, but it’s still dead by the time it’s been eaten. The point is, the predator kills it and eats it relatively fresh. Scavengers pick up meat that’s died for some other reason, and may have been dead for a while, and they don’t care much about whether it’s rotten. Human beings kill their own, even if some other human does the actual killing. We go to considerable lengths to keep it fresh. We fit the predator model much better than the scavenger model. Scavengers wouldn’t bother with refrigeration.
