Because people eat and put gasoline in their cars.
If Michael shirks his duties at the supermarket, it is going to be harder for the place to get things done. It is going to be hard for someone to put food on their table if they come into the supermarket and see nothing but empty shelves.
It is going to be hard for families to commute, guys to cruise chicks or girls to get to the mall if their cars are low on gas and they pull up to Gordon’s garage only to see it unattended with a sign on the window “Closed: Owner abandoned the place in order not to let life pass him by!”
Sounds like Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing where Fudge got himself into Peter’s room. His parents solved that problem by installing a doorlatch for Peter’s bedroom.
I was reading Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe, particularly the first chapter. The protagonist is trying to walk the dog (ostensibly to get to an outside phone to call his mistress) while his wife says it is so rare that he is home while their daughter is awake. The wife suggests reading a bedtime story to the little girl while she will give the doorman some cash to walk the dog, and the protagonist feels foiled. I get a sense that reluctance to tend to small matters like a bedtime story will have ramifications later.

Elizabeth{bellowing}: I WANT MY OWN BATHROOM FOR CHRISTMAS!!
