The ‘end of the road’ very easily misses services provided by the market, as providing them way out in the boonies isn’t as profitable as they’d like. UPS and FEDEX don’t deliver the ‘last mile’, they outsource to USPS, who’s legally obligated to deliver to all US addresses. The government imposes a micro tax on your phone bill to get the lines out to rural communities.
And every inch of cable and fiber optic line was laid backed by heavy government subsidies, up to and including guaranteed monopolies.
