“Taken aback”? For what reason? I merely pointed out an inconsistency. And it is true, after all.

It appears that we are at an impasse… Also from the St Andrews article, (review the last sentence in particular), “I would be remiss not to adequately describe both sides of the argument whether the United States is better classified as a democracy or as a Constitutional Republic. An article in The Atlantic mentions how President Abraham Lincoln attempted to unite both terms into one form of government. He did so in the Gettysburg Address where he stated that the United States is a “government of the people, by the people, and for the people”. This seems to argue that although the United States is, by definition, a Constitutional Republic, it could be considered a democracy that serves the people.”

I forgot to add… those words are from an article by St Andrews Law review, Feb 12, 2021 by Martin Duffy.

We are actually a Constitutional Republic…. The United States Constitution is one of the most important legal documents in modern history. It has allowed each state to remain equal when discussing matters on the floor of Congress and has allowed for people throughout these United States to be heard in the matters of government. The US falls under governmental classifications for both Indirect Democracy and Constitutional Republic, but could be more accurately classified as the latter. The true power of the United States Federal Government derives from the populace that it protects and governs but ultimately its rule of law comes from the Constitution. Therefore, since the US government is representative in nature and derives its laws from the Constitution, it should be classified as a Constitutional Republic rather than a Democracy. When Benjamin Franklin was asked about what form of government he had helped to create, he responded, “a Republic, if you can keep it”.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Abraham Lincoln. This is where we are as a nation.

“Stuck here’? Have you ever spent time in another country that was not on the tourist path? I have, and I’d rather live here. We are better off than the majority of other countries. Most issues are ‘first world’ problems. Yes, we have problems, no doubt about that. But changing your perspective, i.e. “get to” rather than “have to” does a body good.

I’m so old that I remember… “Clams got scruples!” I can’t remember the context, but I remember that line. Had to be the seventies or eighties, when I was a kid.

Yes, Reagan really did say that. It was in a speech during the presidential election of 1964. If you want to watch the whole thing, it’s about 29 minutes long. It’s really good speech, and there are other quotes from it that people have used. Look for “A Time for Choosing.” I’m not a big Reagan fan, but the speech is good, and is relevant today.

Darn. Here I was hoping to find some lighthearted repartee, and I received a language lesson instead. Too bad. And for what it’s worth, HOA’s are definitely bad. No one should have the right to tell you what you can do with your own home. “Live like we tell you to live, not how you think you want to live.” Crazy. See you guys next week.

You beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing. There is a difference between the two.
