Maybe he found Jim Croche’s bottle in the song (“If I could keep time in a bottle…”). Hopefully it didn’t come from Croche’s urn, if he’s in one…

Yes—particularly when there is something else attracting your attention, as I experienced that day; I’d almost never been with horses up until that time.

Horace could have some fun here by painting, “Pegasus was here! How about some apples?” over the sign. The non-quadrupedal-stance, yet equine, hoof prints, and the lack of any horse’s teeth-cropped grass, would be consistent with a winged horse doing multiple “touch-and-go” landings, then painting the message with a paint brush held in his teeth…

I did much the same thing once in Hiawassee, Georgia, when I was 11 or 12 years old. After we (members of the local Lions Club chapter and their children) unfolded and set up 5,000 folding metal chairs for the Georgia Mountain Fair (long before it became the huge venue it is today), I walked over to give two horses in an adjacent pasture some potato chips from the bag I’d bought. A boy’s voice behind me said, “Hey kid, can’t you read?!” I stepped back—and only then did I see the hand-made “Don’t Feed the Horses” sign, hanging on a fence wire, which I had been leaning against while I gave the horses their treats…

In the 1988 comedy movie “Hot to Trot” (which starred Bob—later “Bobcat”—Goldthwaite and Dabney Coleman, and Don [voiced by John Candy], a talking horse [whose father was voiced by Burgess Meredith]), before the stakes race that Don and Goldthwaite’s character raced in, the track’s animated light board—during the “Boots and Saddles” horn call—showed a standing, band-uniform-wearing horse playing a tuba (or a similar-looking baritone), who looked rather like Horace.

That would explain why, unlike regular horses, Horace and Melody are sapient (including being able to speak), are “house-broken,” and have wider diets, including things such as coffee (“Gulliver’s Travels” has illustrations of Houyhnhnms doing things such as milking a cow, building and living in house-like structures, etc., much to Gulliver’s astonishment). He wrote that they live to be 75 or 80 years old, and he mentioned that his mistress—in the Houyhnhnm household in which he lived—was even able to use a needle and thread (which he had with him).

Horace in a (or I guess THE) Wonkavator might start an interstellar war, if he happened to press the “Up” button…

In Horace’s world, there is apparently no Lulu.com , CreateSpace.com, or other POD—Print-On-Demand—publishers, who handle all order-taking and shipping, and even marketing. (CreateSpace is owned by Amazon, which automatically advertises such books, and Lulu has an arrangement with Amazon to do that as well; the books need ISBN’s in order to be eligible for that.) Fortunately for us—and our keeping tabs on Horace’s misadventures—our world is not so deprived (see: www.amazon.com/Year-Horse-Dark-Side-Collection/dp/1482506971 ).

There is quite a “selection” of such destructive bands: www.google.com/search?source=hp&ei=8H5vXNSlENHR9AONnrjwAw&q=rock+band+smashing+guitar&oq=rock+bands+that+smash&gs_l=psy-ab.1.1.0i22i30l4.1368.9406..16119…0.0..0.113.2302.3j19……0….1..gws-wiz…..0..35i39j0j0i131.z3pHidwkRYM .

Maybe it was a song by one of those bands that smash their instruments onstage…
