I’m confused by a lot of what you said, but in answer to the initial question- I believe that the distaste is because while fanart is an interesting exercise in curiosity, creating an entire movie seems ‘gimmicky’. As well, the plot they chose with it being a stereotypical High School scene was disappointing to many people who had gotten used to MLP being fairly forward-thinking in their general plotlines.
