    Helium is not toxic to breathe. In fact, it is used to replace nitrogen in mixed gas diving to greater depths, to avoid the narcotic properties of nitrogen at those depths. In commercial/technical diving this is caused “heliox.” Breathing from a helium balloon is hazardous because it is full of helium and lacks oxygen, making you susceptible to passing out due to hypoxia.
