You are absolutely wrong about my stance. I do NOT advocate a wait and see approach like the letter decries and, for the last time, I am not against protest marches. But I am done wasting my time explaining myself to a stranger on the internet who is incapable of understanding the nuance of my viewpoint. Good luck to you.

Maybe we are talking past one another. MLK didn’t just have people march in the streets and then think they were done. He engaged in many activities, including speeches and letters to explain the plight of his people, negotiations with those who opposed the cause, protest activities that targeted specific issues, marches directly to city hall (see panel 2 of the comic), etc. I’m not saying don’t inconvenience people or don’t make them angry, I’m saying don’t only do that – do something that is constructive along with it because at the end of the day, you have to change hearts and minds to have any lasting effect. MLK was successful because he used a targeted, multi-pronged approach. He didn’t have people block roads and then call it done. He did the hard work of constructive and instructive activities that changed the culture, which is where the real progress comes.

But, the point of the comic (and many who agree with the author) is that it DOESN’T work if you merely inconvenience people and don’t win them over to your side. You push them away. And if you make them angry enough, they actively fight against your cause (e.g., calling their representatives to complain about you), which weakens the effectiveness of your protest.

I completely understand the letter and it’s context, but perhaps you don’t understand my point. I’m not saying don’t inconvenience people or don’t “put problems right in people’s faces”. I’m saying just inconveniencing people doesn’t accomplish anything if that isn’t accompanied by words and actions that actually effect change.

I love that quote. But, I don’t think Pastis is saying don’t protest or don’t inconvenience people; he’s saying don’t do pointless protest that merely inconveniences others while not achieving any goals. Instead, do something that will actually make a difference.

Not to be nit-picky, but you’re missing a letter. It’s aptronym.

Spice Girls are definitely tougher than REM. That one is easy. For the other bout, Cookie Monster has a lot of energy and I think he harbors a lot of pent-up rage under the surface, but Barney is downright evil – that one is a toss-up for me.

Enter.Name.Here is technically correct. When separating syllables in English, when you encounter a single consonant followed by a vowel, the consonant stays with the following vowel, not with a preceding vowel.
