   July 4th does NOT commemorate the start of a war. On July 4 1776, the war itself had already been going on for well over a year. July 4th commemorates the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies from Great Britain.

   It certainly resonated with me.All kids are not alike. Some are athletic and some are not. I was not athletic as a kid. Indeed, at 12 years old, I was already 6 ft tall, skinny as a rail, and so uncoordinated I could barely walk and chew gum at the same time. I hated organized sports because it was all about winning and nothing else. Because of this, my tall skinny self was always stuck out there in weeds like Calvin. And if I made a mistake… Well, things happened just like in the strip. Not all the coaches were like Mr. Lockjaw, in fact most of them weren’t, but some were, and a few were even worse.On the other hand, I did enjoy sandlot baseball because it was mostly other kids like me, unorganized, and it was all about having FUN.

   I was on the chess team too. I was an okay player. I probably won more than I lost, but one senior kid on our team was good enough that he won the state singles championship. He went to the nationals and came in in the top ten. The football and basketball teams were mediocre that year, but they got all the press in the yearbook. The chess champion barely got an honorable mention. (About thirty five years later, he retired from the USAF as a brigadier General.)

   Because of medical issues, my first daughter had to be bottle fed. Even though I worked full time, my wife and I shared the middle-of-the-night feedings. It was a monumental hassle. However, there were trade offs. After one 3 AM feeding and burping, I was playing with my newborn and she gave me the biggest, first ever smile. My heart burst with love and joy, and that alone made it all worth while.If having babies was as bad as some make it out to be, nobody would have more than one.

   I must really be a geek because I understood everything he wrote. I checked the date on the comic and it said 2-19. Jason and his friends are not old enough to have been alive during the Pentium II era.

   …and it might also be that the affair is all in her imagination. It might be that while she is commiserating with her neighbor, her husband is out working hard to keep up his end of the marital responsibility.

   Of course, it’s also a cartoon, so anything is possible.

   That was sad.The song is from early 67 so Geri’s grandmother probably sang it to her mom.
