Remember back when you were in school and you got three months of vacation every year, something that you looked forward to every year as you worked your way to one day getting a job, starting a career ? Then one day you get that job, the result of those years in school, and the only thing that you have to look forward to is 3 days at a place like Geek’s Neck.
The first year that I was teaching , I was asked to help judge the classes’ fire safety contest posters. The winning class was going to get to take a trip to visit the fire house. I voted for the second grade class as first prize, everyone else voted for fifth grade class. The fifth grade one maybe was a little better, but I thought that given the talent disparity, and how well that they had worked on it, the second graders deserved to win for their effort. But the fifth grade class won, and afterward, I was told, the fifth grade always wins, the arrangement was already made for them to take the trip.
Remember back in the late 1960s early 1970s when the Big Mac had a special toothpick to hold it together? Didn’t really need it, but it was for the effect of a hamburger stacked that high, a new concept in hamburgers. Today, two patties is nothing.
In the old days, the waitress would be accommodating, and go to the bar and get a plastic Martini sword, to keep the customer satisfied. And that was back when they made even less per hour than these days, with smaller tips since the prices were lower. Today, it is just hurry up and eat, we need your table for the next customer.
