I love poetry (the rhyming kind). Thanks for those posts! Off Luann subject, but I wrote a poem called ā€œBlack and Whiteā€ about losing oneā€™s sight, and when colors fade. It got raves a few years ago at the American Council of the Blind.

I wrote this, using a few lines from the comic. Youā€™ll recognize T.J., et al.

    AFRAID TO TAKE A CHANCE

He thought he wasnā€™t good enough,So his hands in his pockets he shoved. He was afraid to make a commitment,Though he dated a girl that he loved.

He thought she only liked himBecause he saved her life one time.He guessed her feeling was heartfelt,But he was afraid it was only short time.

Heā€™d seen her with another,Though that was a year ago.He was afraid she wanted ā€œmanlyā€,And that he was a bit soft and slow.

He thought that if he kissed her,That she might turn away.He was afraid that sheā€™d reject him,Though she hinted every day.

He questioned their emotions. They worked together most days.He was afraid it was only closeness,That caused him to feel that way.

He felt like a klutz when he was with her,While she seemed ā€œtogetherā€ and ā€œcoolā€.He was afraid heā€™d say something stupid. He was afraid heā€™d come across like a fool.

He told how he felt to his parents. He told how he felt to his friend. They all told him to ā€œgo for itā€,But he was afraid to jump in.

He told everyone but the lady ā€“The one who was close to his heart. He was afraid heā€™d get tongue-tied or blurt out,And embarrass himself at the start.

He didnā€™t want to wear his feelings ā€“His uncertainty in plain view.He was afraid that sheā€™d laugh at him,Which would hurt him through and through.

His friend said to quit the moaning,To ask her on a real date.ā€œNothing ventured, nothing gainedā€, he told him,Likely it would go just great.

He doesnā€™t want her with him out of pity,So he sweats and his hairā€™s turning gray.Heā€™s debating on pins and needles,When to ask her, and what he can say

One guy told him that he is headingFor death ā€“ this might be his last dance. The tombstone will say: ā€œDied from boredomā€ ā€“He was afraid to take a chance.

So for all of us who are living,Sometimes we have to go out on a limb.We have to put our feet in the water,If we ever want to learn how to swim

You donā€™t learn to fly in a classroom. You have to get in the pilotā€™s seat. You donā€™t win a war on the sidelines,Youā€™ve got to get into the heat.

Showing emotions can be mentally risky. To be emotionally numb, thereā€™s no strife.ā€œSadā€ and ā€œhappyā€ are part of real living, And some people are dead all their life.

So you give up fun and passionā€˜cause you rather save a tear.Your jobā€™s a gamble a lot of the timeSo you wonā€™t chance holding anything dear.

So you wander through life being aimless,And as you take your final breath,The undertaker molds your puzzling look, andOn your gravestoneā€™s carved: ā€œBored to deathā€.

I just joined this! Even though I quite taking the paper when our local one (biggest city in the state) changed to 3 days a week and more like USA Today rather than much local. I still like the comics and Luann has always been a favorite! And yes, Iā€™m an old blind lady (FYI: 70 and high partial legally blind for 10 year). Iā€™ve been reading the comments for awhile, and with Brad and Toni back in the picture, Iā€™m going to share a poem I wrote about them. I hope you all enjoy it.
