    I’m pretty sure you need electricity to run the pump that circulates the hot water, too.

    I hope you’re where there’s lots of sunshine. Hereabouts (southeastern lower MI) the weather this time of year runs to heavy overcast.

    I think that for once that’s dropped off Janis’s radar, maybe.

    But in most of the country, the temperature can drop to minus forty and stay there for a week or two.

    Is that -40*F* or -40*C*? (heh heh – tactful of you to choose that round number!)

    She’s worried about losing her phone service because she can’t charge her batteries!

    Ah yes, the 2003 outage. It wasn’t the entire northern US. Somewhere around maybe Chicago (IIRC) & points west things were fine. Satellite photos were spectacular—city lights most places, but a large quadrant of the US (OK, and parts of Canada!) were totally black. Northeast and northern midwestern US.

    I kind of suspect Janis’s big worry is not being able to charge her phone.

    Hmph. Here in town, we’ve had outages of a week or so, more than once. (Wind more than snow or ice is often the main culprit—a tree takes out nearby power lines, and even bringing in crews from other states DTE is slow.)

    Me either. (Never watch TV (for over half a century). I’d add, “I’m too old for that one”, except it sounds like it may have been old enough—the Charmin guy was.)

    @Tenax “5/18/2023 gives a little backstory …. his Mom had a severe stroke …”

    Thank you for posting that!
