For me there is a deeper issue re Peter, which does have current implications. If Peter is indeed the man the Scriptures reveal, fallible and human, then the claim that the Pope (as his successor) is infallible is hard to justify.
Peter was changed by the indwelling Holy Spirit, but was still later rebuked by Paul (Galatians 2:14) for not upholding the truth of the gospel.
Well, that is a common opinion these days – that the Bible is merely a record of man’s search for God. However, the Bible itself claims to be the very words of God. What you do with those words depends on which of these views you believe.
Peter was appointed an apostle by Jesus, and subsequently was a leader in the early church. The Catholic Church claims are to lend authority to their own popes.
When you live in a small town, you do get used to smiling at everyone. In the city they think you’re weird. Must be lonely!
