“Robert Kane”? Like Bob Kane, the co-creator of Batman? (Though it’s only been in the last few years that DC finally started giving Bill Finger his much-deserved credit as co-creator; for decades DC would claim Kane as Batman’s only creator. Bob Kane was kind of a sleaze for that, honestly.)

Actually, he pretty much killed his mentor, “Pops” Clutch. He was taking Pops to the hospital in a school bus after a heart attack, but deliberately drove slowly to set a record for the most cars stuck behind the bus, thus leading to Pops’ demise.

Newspaper editors know that the second they cancel a strip, they’ll be flooded with complaints from readers. It usually takes something drastic (like, a Scott Adams meltdown) to get them to cancel ANY comic strip. This certainly isn’t going to do it.

The ocean may not be capable of thought or murderous intent, but what about all the cephalopods that live in it?

Now even the characters are asking “Where’s Crankshaft?”.

In the last panel, in addition to Totally Not Ed Crankshaft, we have Yet Another Generic Blonde Woman (but this one has glasses!), Barry Allen (the Silver Age Flash), and… I’m going to guess one of the twins (Emily or Amelia), who has chosen to be a child again this week. (Probably Emily, who has deaged herself to get away from Skip.)

Why do people read the comments section – which undoubtedly takes even more time than it takes to just read the comic – just so they can publicly fume and rage and make ugly remarks about other people’s comments?

Or George C. Scott in “Dr. Strangelove”: “I wish we had one of them doomsday machines.”

It’s Mopetoni’s, they may well have… you know… put it back after eating, if you catch the meaning. (They vomited it back up.)

I’m pretty sure Batiuk thinks people are still reading this in printed newspapers.

Wait… maybe that’s it. Maybe, all this time, Batiuk has been setting up that his entire continuity is one huge “All You Zombies”/“Predestination” paradox! All the various author avatars and other characters who all seem to act the same? The interchangeable Generic Blondes? It was all INTENTIONAL! By Zanzibar, it all makes sense now! EVERY CHARACTER IS LITERALLY THE SAME PERSON! Genius, Tom! A Very Elegant Solution™, indeed!

Or possibly Davis just doesn’t care and used any stock characters he could find in the Crankshaft Reusable Art Portfolio. Or Batiuk didn’t specify which character in the panel was supposed to be the editor and which was Batton Thomas Creator Of The Comic Strip Three O’Clock High, and Davis just guessed. One of those is probably the more likely scenario. Probably.
