If there was a picture of her on the book cover, I’m pretty sure Bernice, her old neighbor, or Nancy, who bought Mrs. Horner’s house and now rents it out to Brad and Toni, would recognize her.

You’d have Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

What? Jump in a freezing lake? Sure. It’s called a polar bear plunge.

One episode of Cheers had Paul talk about how every winter they’d go down and jump into the ocean. So Norm and Cliff and company decide that if Paul can do it, they can too! Then after they leave to go do it, Carla asks Paul where he grew up, and he answers “Honolulu.”

I’ve heard of pell-mell, but not really in that context. It’s generally used more to mean wild or disorganized, as in “run around pell-mell” to denote someone running around with no idea what they’re doing. But the rest of Earl’s words/phrases are more just synonyms of quick and/or now.

The string goes from the doorknob to the board holding up the bucket (and ultimately to the bucket itself). The door opens, releasing the tension holding the board in place. The board is on a hinge, so when the tension is gone, the weight of the bucket sends it tipping towards the sluice, spilling the water onto dad and his chair.

I shared a bathroom with two older sisters, so I had it hammered into me as a kid to put the seat down when I’m done, so it’s reflex at this point. One hand goes to flush, the other lowers the seat without even really thinking about it.

I was thinking that they must not have seen Back to the Future, where a lightning bolt was used as a stand in for a nuclear reaction. But Short Circuit is a much better example, since it’s something electronic getting zapped by lightning and going bananas.

We had a stuffed duck (stuffed animal, not dead animal that’s been stuffed) in the room where we hid the eggs. So of course an egg always found it’s way under that duck.

Man, terrible timing for a comic about watching any sport right now.
