…did things just get political in here? What is it with Japan and the damn whaling, anyway? It’s like everyone else gave up wearing parachute pants in the ‘80s, it’s really not that hard to just stop doing something terrible.

Nah. We don’t have “fall” in Texas. We have “hot” , “still hot”, “football season” and “spring”

    The thing is…

Reasoning doesn’t work. We tried that.Being nice doesn’t work. Tried that, too.Being mean doesn’t work, either.Ignoring it is escapism. What does that leave us with?

The answer, incidentally, will always be, “No! THis is a HOUSE in a neighborhood exclusively containing HOUSES you may turn it into a HOUSE and nothing else! And that is not how variances or rezoning works!!!”

Holy crap a comic about city planning

“I’m looking at this house in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Can I turn it into a bar / gentleman’s club / toxic waste dump? No? Can I get a variance? Rezoning?”

    Every. Day.

Urban planner and home designer (aka, as close to an architect as possible without being AIA) here. I see a lot of these issues mentioned about tiny houses, and they’re always wrong for one reason or another. Let me enlighten y’all:

    1) tiny houses aren’t for everyone. That’s not the tiny houses’ fault if someone tries it and discovers they’re not cut out for it. I mean, damn- are you going to say surfing is inherently terrible if you try it once and didn’t like it? That’s basically what that argument boils down to.

    2) Yes, tiny houses tend to be more expensive per square foot, for a variety of reasons. But personally I’d rather have a $36,000 loan paid off in five years than a $120,000 loan paid off in twenty years.

    3) Tiny houses are perfect for some demographics: single professionals, retirees, transitional housing for the homeless, vacation rentals… Just because most people want SF-D housing doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with those who don’t. They have their reasons.

Since when does waking up bring even a temporary sense of bliss?!

Chances of dying from a gunshot wound in the U.S. : 1 in 78 (1.28% chance) in any given year.

Chances of a schoolkid being one of those: 1 in 851 (0.00117% chance) in any given year.

You want to talk commonsense? Let’s start by discussing objective, statistical probability versus subjective emotions…
