Some Spanish speakers will code-switch into mija when otherwise speaking or writing in English. Mijo is used just like mija, meaning “my son” among family or elders or “buddy” among close male friends.
Well said but they still deserve more respect. They can enable someone, like a close friend, to graduate with an Ivy league degree with half the debt! They are not for underachievers but for those who may be less interested in appearances than long term goals,
It takes less than a minute to read this strip. That is about right for this one as it actually has become more entertaining to watch it get worse and worse and worse than it was to read the not exactly great “plot lines”.
In my town there are neighborhoods built in different eras but sidewalks aren’t related to time so much as it seems density and pavement. In areas where the roads were paved and houses closer together there are sidewalks. These homes were built anywhere from the 1940s through the 1970s. We also have neighborhoods built on dirt roads where the houses were built further apart and there are no sidewalks. I presume it was thought that fewer cars and fewer pedestrians and slower speeds made sidewalks unnecessary. Problems occur when these roads are paved and additional homes are built in these areas. Sidewalks were placed in front of our house a few years ago and we have seen at least a 100% increase in pedestrian traffic since.

I dare to add another thought. The head has more surface area exposed to the cold in proportion to its mass. Likewise, the hands and feet have more surface area exposed to the cold in proportion to their mass than the trunk or proximal arms and legs. With this in mind, add another data point in that the head has much more vascular flow, supplied by the carotid arteries, than hands or feet. So much heat loss comes from the head, but when in prolonged cold hands and feet are at risk from frostbite.
She is smirking because of ironic humor. The point of the strip is to entertain. We shouldn’t look for fictional cartoon characters to be role models except for “David and Goliath”, but they were puppets on a show sponsored by the Lutheran Church which I watched because there was absolutely nothing else on. Lighten up on your expectations of fictional characters they are here to entertain. Reading a strip with examples of perfect parents wouldn’t make sense.
These are fictional characters whose point of existence is finding humor in everyday life. Sometimes it’s easy to take things too seriously. Exaggeration is part of the humor.
