Calvinist1966 Free

Born in 1966. Live in the UK. Favourite strip is Calvin and Hobbes so - like many others - I have taken my username from it. My second favourite is Andy Capp. The Wizard of Id and Red and Rover are in strong competition for third place.

Especially NOT Calvin. He has made many good points over the years especially in his comments about bullies. He is certainly NOT a bully himself as Susie can beat him easily and we have seen her do so many times.

As I think you remember, I stated that YOU convinced me that a living Hobbes who had NO OBJECTIVE REALITY would be in Calvin’s mind so YOU convinced me that Hobbes MUST HAVE OBJECTIVE REALITY. Thank YOU again for convincing me that I was wrong to state that Hobbes has no objective reality.

I think he is smiling in knowing agreement. Andy would have recognized Chalkie’s voice.

Better to “feel a biff cloud coming on” than to actually feel a biff!

Sid James has appeared in comics. He appeared with a Tony Hancock in Film Fun during the 1950s. When Hancock and Sid went their separate ways with Tony starring in Hancock and Sid starring in Citizen James, the strip was replaced by a Sid James strip.

In the 1970s, there would be a comic strip version of the Sid James comedy Bless This House in the comic Look-In.

That would be breaking the Fourth Wall more than usual. The characters often break the Fourth Wall by speaking directly to us but do not refer to their writers or artists.

It is true that – at separate times – I have stated “I am not arguing that Hobbes is real” and “Hobbes must have objective reality.” The reason behind this apparent contradiction is that I have explained that I am NOT arguing that Hobbes is real but that Watterson states that he kept Hobbes’s reality ambiguous. I have already explained this several times AND I have quoted Watterson as stating “The question of Hobbes’s reality is of no interest to me whatsoever and each story arc goes out of its way to avoid resolving the issue. Calvin sees Hobbes one way. Everyone else sees Hobbes another way. I think this is how life works. No two people see the world in exactly the same way. Hobbes is more to do with the subjective nature of reality than with dolls coming to life.”

Does THAT sound as though I am arguing that Hobbes is real?

As for my comment that “Hobbes must have objective reality”, you almost certainly remember already that I said this in reply to YOUR statement that Hobbes having NO OBJECTIVE REALITY makes him imaginary. I explained that since Watterson does NOT see Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination, Hobbes MUST have objective reality AS WELL AS being an example of “The subjective nature of reality.”

Yes, we AGREE that Hobbes being shown as alive when Calvin is NOT around is something that COULD be imagined by Calvin. As I have explained many times, seeing Hobbes alive when he is alone ONLY aroused my SUSPICION that he might NOT be intended to be part of Calvin’s imagination. It was Watterson’s comments about NOT seeing Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination which confirmed to me that he was NOT limiting Hobbes to what Calvin WOULD imagine.

He has been shown with a sore butt in three separate strips in the ten year publication of this wonderful strip. One spanking seems to have been applied between panels by Dad. The other two seem to have been applied between panels by Mom.

As she once called Calvin! People in glass houses should not throw stones, Susie.
