   Thomas Jefferson married his wife Martha in 1772. As a wedding gift, martha and thomas were giving a slave, Sally Hemings by martha’s fater John. Sally’s mother was Betty Hemings, a slave owned by Martha’s father, John Wayles, who was sally’s father. In other words, Martha’s father gave to the newlyweds a gift of a slave, who also happened to be Martha’s half sister.

   After Martha died in 1782, Thomas jefferson took up “relations” with Sally and fathered 6 children with her.

   can you imagine any world where you could own a human being who happens to be your half sibling? Jefferson may be the father of the constitution, but he had a little work to do when it comes to human rights.

   My ex-wife grew up in a house built in around 1920 (I’m guessing). It had a standard porch and front door, and then TWO side doors. First one was for people, 2nd went to a small room (with another door inside that small room. It was configured this way so they could leave the outside door open for the ice man but lock the inner door so nobody could break into the house. It also had a metal door to the basement for the coal delivery.

   See previous post about a long career as a system administrator. Whenever we had a situation like this, we would have to gather evidence to PROVE that the issue belonged to another team. “It’s not my server, it’s your server, and here’s the evidence which i’m sure you’ll agree with. let me know if I can help”. Often you had to understand someone elses job better than they did.

   I was a unix system administrator most of my adult life (meaning, I managed hundreds of servers).

   The problem was usually carbon based (vs silicon based). We used to say “The problem is between the keyboard and the chair”.

    Decades ago we were checking out an in-home day care. Nice provider, nice home, but there was a hitch: She only accepted little girls. No exceptions. She said everything just ran smoother. She warned us: if you were planning on another child and got it “wrong”, there were no sibling exceptions. The girls were welcome, the boys were not. (not sure how she pulled this off with licensing and such)
