I live in Machias, NY, and we have a similar situation. Our Lime Lake has two outlets – one drains to the Atlantic via the St. Lawrence River, and the other drains to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River. So not two oceans, but still weird. It’s because the town sits on the St. Lawrence continental divide.
The Ugly American was written by William Lederer. Graham Greene wrote The Quiet American. Easy to confuse – both Cold War novels set in southeast Asia. The Ugly American was a good guy – the The Quiet American was the prototypical spy.
I was a freshman at Syracuse U in Sept of 1980. On Sept 3, our RA said to me, ‘I just talked to my mom. Apparently we’ve been living next to Abbie Hoffman. He’s turning himself in tomorrow’. The next day, Sept 4, he surrendered to authorities.
That’s a well-known and well-respected adage here in Buffalo!
